Extra SNAP Benefits Could Expire Soon

SNAP benefits recipients in Georgia could see their monthly allotments decrease in October if the Biden administration does not extend the public health emergency declaration by October 15, 2022.

The benefits were increased under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

This allowed states like Georgia to waive certain eligibility requirements and give households the maximum amount of SNAP benefits for their household size.

The extra benefits were provided even if a household’s income might traditionally qualify them for fewer SNAP dollars.

However, states can only waive those requirements if both the federal government and the state have an emergency or disaster declaration in place.

Therefore, if the Biden administration does not extend the federal public health emergency declaration by October 15, those extra SNAP dollars could disappear beginning in November 2022.
