Updated: October 8, 2018

In our post today, we are going to address a common issue that food stamp recipients have with the Georgia Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This issue relates to the online benefits portal that the Georgia food stamps program uses for the management of benefits. Georgia Gateway manages benefits for the following government programs:

  • Medicaid
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Food Stamps
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Women Infants and Children (WIC)
  • Child Care and Parent Services

Saturday, January 13, 2018 – A number of Georgia Gateway users reported issues accessing their online benefits portal, as well as the Georgia Gateway website. After research, we can confirm that the Georgia Gateway online portal is down. Users have also reported that they have not received their scheduled benefits.

This is a huge issue for the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) – the government sector that is responsible for running the food stamps program. To make things even worse for SNAP recipients, this outage has occurred during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. All government offices, including the Georgia DFCS is closed in observance of the holiday, which extends the resolution to this problem an additional business day.

  1. I had put in a change of information in November and I still haven’t got my raise in food stamps. It difficult to eat when you expecting something to be on the card.

    • Hi Ryan,

Please contact the Georgia SNAP Hotline at 1-800-436-7442. They will be able to give you an update on your benefits. Thanks!

  2. I have tried to renew my snap benefits and can not get into my acct. Will this delay my benefits? Will I be penalized for not having my renewal done by my monthly due date of my benefits… my renewal letter said that I should have my renewal done by the benefits due date of the 15th of the month to insure that I get them for the month of Feb. The cut off date for my renewal is the last day of January but I do not want a delay in my benefits if the assured date is the 15th! Also what do I do if I do not get my benefits on the date of issuance? Thank you.

    • Hi Lisa,

We completely understand your concern. The Georgia Gateway online benefits platform has been down for several days. It looks like it is back up and running now though, so you should be able to submit your renewal form online. Many people are experiencing the same issue with their referrals. At this time, we are unsure whether or not penalties will be waived for this issue. We will let you know if we hear anything. Thanks!

  3. This is ridiculous! I do everything online, and the last two times I have had to renew my benefits, the website is down and it’s on the weekend before my Renewal is due the following Monday. So, my benefits wind up getting canceled! This isn’t fair to those of us who do everything online. They should allow users to come in the next business day DFACS is open to complete their Renewal and not cancel their benefits due to something beyond their control. I am hoping that I will go in this coming Tuesday and be allowed to complete my Renewal without being penalized and my benefits being cancelled.

    • Hi Mary,

We completely understand your frustration. Many people are experiencing the same issue with their referrals. We have not received any update from the DFCS regarding an extension for renewal. It looks like the Gateway website is back up and running, so you should be able to submit your renewal now.

  4. I completed my renewal, and the Gateway system has locked me out of my online account 3 times the technical support personal offer the support of ” create a new user name” every time. Well the system does not all you to link your information after 2 times. It says that it is linked to many times. So now my information is floating around in never-land while it looks as if I didn’t do as I was asked to do what I was supposed to do. I do have time to complete it by the due date. But it would be helpful, if the technical support people were not only more helpful, but were not rude, and treated you with a little more respect while you were speaking with them. This all started on Friday before the system went down, just wondering if its a glitch, because my renewal is not linked to my account.

    • Hi Michelle, I’m really sorry to hear about all the difficulty you’re having renewing your food stamps. I’m also sorry to hear about your experience with technical support. If you would like, you are able to fill a complaint regarding your poor experience with the Inspector General. Here is the link to do so: https://dhs.georgia.gov/office-inspector-general.

  5. I personally think that when such a thing happen that it should be considered I don’t think its right whoever is in charge of the issue of stamps should step down and someone else get the job its not fair that for me to have to wait or be without food due to their mix up we do everything that is ask send in all information and still don’t receive the benefits that’s not right but its not food out their mouth were the one to suffer

    • Hi Pauline, we totally agree with you. It is not fair that food stamp recipients have to suffer because of their mess up.

      • Hi Pam, have you tried contacting your local DFCS office? You can also call the SNAP customer care hotline at 1-877-423-4746. Hope this helps you get the answers you’re looking for!

  6. I been trying to re do my food stamps for 2 months on gateway but only get Medicaid and child care applications. Why is that? How do I apply on gateway for food stamps?

    • Hi Brandy,

Unfortunately, you cannot apply for food stamps online using the Gateway platform. You must fill out the application and mail it in or drop it off at your local DFCS office.
